Since the Han Dynasty, Kyara Agarwood has been the most important incense material for royal ceremonies, including offerings to heaven, prayers for blessings, Buddhist rituals, and indoor aromatherapy.
 
In ancient China, three types of incense were considered essential for the emperor's bedchamber: musk, dragon salve, and kyara incense. Kyara agarwood was famously believed to have the power to "call back the soul," likely tied to its effects of rejuvenation and calm. Kyara is also recognized as an excellent natural antibacterial medicine, known to enhance internal organ function and improve circulation. It is particularly effective for regulating energy flow, alleviating pain, clearing blockages, boosting immunity, and benefiting heart health. Notably, the well-known cardiac medication Kyushin contains kyara as an effective remedy for heart conditions.
 
Kyara agarwood is the finest grade of agarwood, cherished for its rarity and exceptional value. Its formation is both intricate and fascinating. It originates from hollow aromatic trees (Aquilaria species) that have become nesting sites for ants or wild bees. The ants’ formic acid, wild bees' honeydew, and other insect secretions mix with the tree's resin, which is absorbed into the tree’s aromatic glands. Under the influence of specific fungi and over many years of mutual absorption and natural fermentation, these substances form agarwood.
 
Kyara agarwood is primarily produced in Southeast Asia, with the kyara from Vietnam’s Nha Trang region being the most esteemed. Its formation requires highly specific conditions, including tree injuries and decades or even centuries of transformation in unique environments. Compared to standard agarwood, kyara contains a higher oil content and has a softer, more pliable texture, making it highly suitable for intricate craftsmanship.
