According to legend, during the Southern Tang Dynasty, Emperor Li Yu had a deep affection for his wife, Lady Zhou Ehuang. Known for her beauty, grace, and literacy, Lady Zhou was also skilled in music and possessed a charm that captivated all. She had a particular fondness for burning incense and often crafted innovative incense tools with her own ingenuity. Each day, she would sit behind a curtain, surrounded by the ethereal fragrance of incense, creating an atmosphere filled with misty aromas. In such a setting, she appeared as if she were a celestial being among the clouds.

However, at bedtime, burning incense in the bedroom was not allowed due to the risk of fire. Deeply fond of incense, Lady Zhou found it difficult to rest peacefully each night. Upon learning of this, Emperor Li Yu crafted a special incense burner for her that could be used in their bedchamber and even created a sachet for her to carry with her.

The incense emitted a captivating fragrance that soothed the senses and delighted the soul. Agarwood releases its fragrance when exposed to heat when steaming wrapped in pears, the crafted incense ball is worn on the body and absorbs human perspiration, the fragrance it emits transforms into a sweet aroma. This incense was subsequently named "Goose Pear Bedchamber Incense." When people learned of the origins of this incense, they began to replicate it, recording the method in the Incense Manual for future generations to appreciate.

The Incense Manual notes that "Goose Pear" refers to a type of strongly aromatic pear. The pear fruit is obovate in shape, with a slanted protrusion near the stem resembling a goose's head, hence the name "goose pear." The process involves crushing ten pears into juice and mixing the juice with 50 grams of powdered agarwood. The mixture is then placed into a silver container, which is subsequently steamed in a double boiler over heat until the pear juice is fully absorbed and dried.

This method allows the agarwood to "borrow" the fruity aroma of the pear juice, blending its rich and sweet fragrance into the wood's natural scent. The resulting incense is sweet but not cloying, with a long-lasting and lingering aroma that brings comfort and peace to the mind. It is said to relieve melancholy, calm the spirit, and promote emotional well-being. Additionally, it is believed to enhance male vitality, boost yang energy, moisturize the lungs, remove dampness, and nourish the stomach.
